Cultural information
My Nation’s culture is my concern
Kwaï ! Kwaï !
You will find in this envelope a questionnaire on the different
facets of Abenaki culture. As you know, we are developing our
community’s first cultural policy. Therefore, it is essential for
all members to be able to express themselves and an exchange must be
established with the off-reserve members.
We have not yet decided on a deadline for the submission of the
policy; however, we wish to submit a draft in fall 2009 and hold a
public forum to which you will be called. We wish to adopt
this policy at an event in 2010 during the 350th anniversary
celebrations of Odanak.
Please complete the questionnair and return it before
September 26th, 2009.
You can return the questionnair by post or fax, to the attention of Nicole O’Bomsawin, 102, Sibosis Street – Odanak - J0G 1H0. Fax number (450) 568-3553.
It is important for us to have everybody’s comments, even if you
feel that Abenaki culture is not part of your life. We wish to
measure people’s interest, the state of practices and directions to
be taken.
We also accept memoirs, letters of opinion or any other document
that you may wish to send us relating to this project.
What is a cultural policy?
In order to protect, feature and develop Abenaki culture for our
distinct society, the Abenaki government of Odanak has begun an
elaboration process for a cultural policy. This policy intends to:
-
Define the community’s cultural identity
-
Determine the expectations and needs of the population, artists and cultural organizations
-
Allow for the offering of a range of cultural services adapted to identified needs in order to improve the quality of life of community members
-
Strengthen the Nation’s cultural specificity
-
Provide the Abenaki government with the knowledge and parameters required for the discussion and negotiation of agreements and partnerships with other ministerial, cultural and heritage sectors
-
Include a cultural component in all the Nation’s concerns and activities
-
Define long-term orientations and vision in order to better plan the services offered in different areas of cultural activity
For any questions or comments or other questionnaires, don’t hesitate to contact Nicole O’Bomsawin, at 450-568-2810 or 450-494-1262.
